Statement of EDF Action President David Kieve
WASHINGTON, DC, May 15, 2024 – “The fossil fuel lobby is force-feeding lies to voters about clean cars while trying to win favor with Donald Trump over fancy dinners at Mar-a-Lago. Together, they’re working to protect massive profits by spending millions to deceive consumers who have – and are at no risk of losing – the freedom to choose to drive whatever kind of car they want.
“Electric vehicles are lapping the competition: they’re increasingly affordable, perform better, cost less to maintain, and their production is creating good-paying jobs across the country.
“The American people deserve to know the truth about what’s fueling these ads: Greed. Your pain at the pump is their profit.”
Background
This week, the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) launched a new seven-figure spending tranche with claims that have been repeatedly debunked by neutral fact-checkers. The ads are airing on local TV stations and on digital platforms in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia, Ohio, Wisconsin, Montana, Texas and Nevada and continue the lobby group’s months-long campaign of misinformation and disinformation on zero-emission vehicles and the EPA’s recently finalized clean cars standards.
